Future IT Job Trends in New Zealand: Skills, Roles and Opportunities Shaping the Next Five Years

New Zealand’s IT job market is entering a more selective and skills-driven phase. The future will not simply be about “more tech jobs” in a general sense. It will be about demand for people who can apply technology to productivity, cyber resilience, automation, customer experience, data-driven decision-making and business transformation.

The technology sector is already a major part of the New Zealand economy. Tech New Zealand reports that in 2024 the sector contributed $23.8 billion to GDP, represented 8% of the national economy, employed more than 119,000 people, and generated $11.4 billion in exports, making technology New Zealand’s third-largest export earner after dairy and tourism. At the same time, the wider labour market remains competitive: Stats NZ reported a 5.6% unemployment rateand 13.8% underutilisation rate in the June 2026 quarter, while SEEK reported that May 2026 job ads were up 12.2% year-on-year but applications per ad remained elevated. 

This means the future IT job market in New Zealand is likely to reward people with specialised, practical and business-aligned digital skills. The strongest trends are likely to be in AI and automation, cybersecurity, cloud and platform engineering, data and analytics, software engineering, digital transformation, and sustainable digital infrastructure.

1. AI and automation will become core workplace skills

Artificial intelligence is moving from a specialist technology area into everyday business operations. SEEK’s May 2026 Employment Report found that job ads referencing AI skills were 118.9% higher than a year earlier, and that 15.0% of Information & Communication Technology job ads contained AI references. Datacom’s 2025 State of AI Index also found that 87% of New Zealand organisations surveyed were using some form of AI, up from 66% in 2024 and 48% in 2023; however, only 12% had rolled AI out across the entire business, with skills shortages, data integration issues and shadow AI slowing progress. 

The implication is clear: AI will create demand for both technical and non-technical IT roles. New Zealand will need AI engineers, machine learning specialists, data scientists, automation developers, AI product managers, MLOps engineers and AI governance specialists. But it will also need business analysts, project managers, customer experience specialists and operations teams who know how to use AI responsibly and effectively.

Deloitte New Zealand’s Tech Trends 2026 argues that the competitive advantage now comes from redesigning how work is done, rather than simply adding new tools to old processes. It also describes AI systems and robotics as part of a “silicon workforce” that will work alongside people in areas such as compliance, service delivery and operations. For job seekers, this means AI literacy will become a baseline skill, while the highest-value roles will go to people who can connect AI with measurable business outcomes.

2. Cybersecurity will remain one of the strongest growth areas

As New Zealand businesses, public agencies and critical services become more digital, cybersecurity is becoming a core business requirement rather than a purely technical back-office function. The National Cyber Security Centre reported 1,164 incident reports in the first quarter of 2026, including three “highly significant” incidents that affected thousands of New Zealanders through sensitive data access. The same report recorded $5.6 million in direct financial loss for the quarter, a 76% increase from the previous quarter, and identified phishing and credential harvesting as the most common incident type. 

The NCSC’s 2025 Cyber Threat Report also warns that New Zealand organisations face rising threat capability and intent, including ransomware-as-a-service, supplier risk, expanded attack surfaces, cloud exposure and third-party dependency. This will drive demand for security analysts, security engineers, incident responders, identity and access management specialists, cloud security engineers, cyber risk managers, privacy and compliance specialists, and security architects.

One important shift is that cybersecurity jobs will not only sit inside large technology companies. Demand will also come from banks, healthcare providers, government agencies, education providers, utilities, retailers, manufacturers and professional services firms. The future cyber professional in New Zealand will need a mix of technical knowledge, risk communication, compliance awareness and business judgement.

3. Cloud and platform engineering will become more sophisticated

Cloud computing has been a major IT trend for years, but New Zealand organisations are now moving from basic cloud adoption to cloud optimisation. Datacom’s 2025 Cloud & Infrastructure Report found that only half of New Zealand organisations said they had realised the benefits expected from cloud investment. The report points to the need for hybrid cloud strategies, containerisation, stronger security governance and better architecture, rather than simply moving legacy systems into the cloud. 

This will increase demand for cloud architects, DevOps engineers, platform engineers, site reliability engineers, Kubernetes and container specialists, infrastructure-as-code specialists, cloud security engineers and FinOps professionals. Employers will look for people who can control cloud cost, improve resilience, automate deployment, secure environments and modernise legacy systems.

Data sovereignty will also shape cloud jobs in New Zealand. Datacom reported that 61% of New Zealand organisations were concerned about data sovereignty, and many were choosing to keep data processing in-country to reduce risk. This means cloud professionals who understand local compliance, security, hybrid architecture and vendor risk will be especially valuable.

4. Data, analytics and AI governance will be essential

AI depends on data quality. As more organisations adopt AI, they will need stronger data foundations: clean datasets, reliable pipelines, privacy controls, metadata, governance, reporting and clear ownership. Datacom’s State of AI Index found that data integration issues and shadow AI are among the barriers slowing AI scaling in New Zealand organisations. 

This points to growing demand for data engineers, analytics engineers, business intelligence developers, data analysts, data governance leads, privacy specialists, data product owners and AI risk professionals. These roles will be important because many organisations have data spread across old systems, cloud platforms, spreadsheets, CRMs, ERPs and third-party tools. Turning that fragmented data into reliable business intelligence will be a major employment area.

The most valuable data professionals will not only know SQL, Python, dashboards and data modelling. They will also understand business context, data ethics, privacy, Māori data considerations where relevant, security and decision-making. As AI systems become more common, organisations will need people who can explain where data comes from, whether it is trustworthy, and how it should or should not be used.

5. Software engineering will not disappear, but expectations will change

Software development will remain a core IT career path in New Zealand, but the skill profile is changing. Tech New Zealand’s August 2026 update says demand is rising for expertise in AI, cybersecurity, cloud infrastructure and software development, while fewer learners are moving through key STEM subjects and early-career pathways remain limited. 

This suggests that software engineers will need broader capability than coding alone. Future-ready developers will be expected to understand secure coding, API design, cloud deployment, AI-assisted development, testing automation, data integration and product thinking. Employers will increasingly value developers who can work across the full lifecycle: problem discovery, design, build, test, deploy, monitor and improve.

A key challenge is the gap between senior and junior opportunities. Earlier Tech New Zealand digital skills research found that the greatest unmet demand was for senior workers with advanced digital skills, while early-career workers and graduates could struggle to secure entry-level roles. This is important for students and career changers: portfolios, internships, industry projects, open-source contributions, certifications and practical experience will matter more than qualifications alone.

6. Digital transformation roles will grow across every industry

Not every future IT job will be deeply technical. As organisations adopt AI, cloud, automation and data platforms, they will need people who can translate between technology teams and business teams. This will increase demand for business analysts, product owners, delivery managers, scrum masters, change managers, UX designers, service designers and digital transformation consultants.

Deloitte’s 2026 report highlights that New Zealand organisations are expected to deliver measurable results from technology, not just experiment with it. That creates opportunities for people who understand both business processes and digital tools. For example, a business analyst who can map a manual workflow and redesign it using automation may be just as important as the developer who builds the solution.

These hybrid roles are especially relevant in healthcare, education, government, finance, agriculture, logistics, tourism and small-to-medium enterprises. Many New Zealand organisations do not need technology for its own sake; they need better productivity, lower cost, stronger customer service, safer operations and faster decisions.

7. Digital infrastructure and data centres will create new technical opportunities

AI and cloud growth require physical infrastructure: data centres, networks, energy systems, cooling systems and secure connectivity. New Zealand is actively positioning itself as a potential hub for sustainable data and AI infrastructure. NZTE says New Zealand offers clean energy, a resilient grid, available land, a cool climate, strong digital connectivity and rule of law, and notes that more than 88% of the country’s electricity comes from renewable sources. 

BCG argues that global computing capacity is expected to more than double by 2030 and that New Zealand could unlock up to $70 billion of economic activity over the next decade if it becomes a preferred data centre destination. Tech New Zealand also describes data centres as infrastructure behind government services, healthcare, online banking, e-commerce and the next wave of AI innovation. 

This will not only create jobs inside data centres. It will also support demand for network engineers, infrastructure engineers, electrical and mechanical technology specialists, data centre operations staff, cloud connectivity specialists, cyber-physical security professionals, sustainability analysts and energy-aware IT architects. The future IT workforce may increasingly overlap with engineering, energy and environmental sustainability.

8. Salaries and competition will favour rare, practical skills

Recruitment data suggests that employers are becoming more targeted in how they pay for technology talent. Robert Half’s 2026 New Zealand IT Salary Guide says technology salaries have largely stabilised, with most employers offering modest 3–5% increases, but pay rises are focused on rare or emerging skills, particularly AI, data engineering and automation

This means job seekers should not assume that all IT roles will grow equally. General IT knowledge will still be useful, but the strongest career leverage will come from combining core technical ability with a clear specialisation. Tech New Zealand’s latest digital skills commentary calls for coordinated action from industry, government and education, including stronger foundations, clearer pathways into digital careers and more opportunities for New Zealanders to participate in the digital economy. Immigration will also continue to play a role: Immigration New Zealand describes the Green List as jobs New Zealand needs workers for, with eligible roles potentially leading to residence immediately or after two years of work. 

However, relying only on overseas talent would be risky. New Zealand needs stronger local pipelines, more work-integrated learning, better graduate pathways, more apprenticeships and internships in digital roles, and stronger upskilling options for people already in the workforce.

Employers should invest in training, not just hiring. The organisations that benefit most from AI, cloud and automation will be those that develop their people alongside their technology.
